When solving matrix valued interpolation problems in the unit disk (such as Nevanlinna-Pick, Carathéodory-Fejér or Schur problems) it is very convenient to work with indefinite inner product structures rather than Hermitian forms. This point of view was advocated in the fifties and sixties by V. P. Potapov and his school. See for instance \textit{V. P. Potapov} [Tr. Mosk. Mat. Obshch. 4, 125-236 (1955; Zbl 0066.06002)]. The present note deals with the structure of certain \(j_{qq}- J_q\)-elementary factor arising in the seminal work: \textit{D. Z. Arov} and \textit{M. G. Krejn} [Funct. Anal. Appl. 15, 123-126 (1981); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 15, No. 2, 61-64 (1981; Zbl 0484.46060)]. Without entering into technical details, these factors play the role of Blaschke products in the factorization theory of analytic functions in the unit disk. Applications to Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation of matrix valued functions are derived from the new structure theorems.
