On strong homology of compact spaces (Q1379801)

\textit{N. E. Steenrod} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 41, 833-851 (1940; Zbl 0025.23405)] defined the strong homology groups for a compact metric space and demonstrated their efficacy over the singular homology groups. In 1960 Milnor gave an axiomatic characterization of strong homology groups for compact metric pairs. Numerous extensions of these results of Steenrod and Milnor are discussed in the introductory section of this paper where related references may also be found. The main result of this paper studies a four-term filtration and the associated graded group of the \(m\)-th strong homology group of a compact Hausdorff space with coefficients in an abelian group. This result provides a higher level of generality which includes Milnor's exact sequence and the universal coefficient formula. Homological algebra techniques together with its attendant spectral sequences are used to prove these results.
