The main result of this paper is a very nice theorem showing that any generalized Kac-Moody, or Borcherds, algebra (subject to the technical restriction that it have no mutually orthogonal imaginary simple roots) has a triangular decomposition as \(g=u- \oplus (g_J+h) \oplus u+\) where \(g_J\) is a Kac-Moody algebra and \(u{\pm}\) are free Lie algebras over certain \(g_J\)-modules. As an example, the author shows that the Monster Lie algebra can be written as \(m=u- \oplus gl_2 \oplus u+\), where \(u{\pm}\) are free Lie algebras on countable numbers of generators.
