The main result of the paper is as follows. An Artin algebra is of infinite representation type if and only if there is no bound on the lengths of the endomorphism rings of finitely generated indecomposable modules. Here the endomorphism rings are viewed as modules over themselves. This extends an earlier result of \textit{A. Skowroński} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 116, No. 2, 229-243 (1994; Zbl 0822.16010)], and the proof uses tilting theory and also results of Skowroński's paper.
