Linear, infinite-dimensional control systems described by partial differential equations of parabolic type with Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. Invertibility and observability problems are formulated. Using functional analytic methods, several conditions for invertibility and observability are presented and proved. The results are then extended for general evolution systems in abstract spaces. Simple examples which illustrate the theoretical considerations are also given. Moreover, several remarks and comments on invertibility and observability problems for linear infinite-dimensional control systems are presented. Similar observability problems have been considered in the monograph of \textit{A. Bensoussan}, \textit{G. Da Prato}, \textit{M. C. Delfour} and \textit{S. K. Mitter} [Representation and control of infinite dimensional systems. Vols. 1 and 2 (1992; Zbl 0781.93002) and (1993; Zbl 0790.93016)].
