In [\textit{H. Yamagishi}, Pac. J. Math. 191, 189--200 (1999; Zbl 1041.11042)], the author constructed a variety \(V_n\) defined over \(\mathbb{Q}\) which parameterizes the set of elliptic curves over \(\mathbb{Q}\) with Mordell-Weil rank \(\geq n\). On the other hand, Lang's conjecture on rational points on varieties of general type says that for any smooth projective variety \(X\) of general type over a number field \(k\), there exists a proper Zariski-closed subset \(Z\) of \(X\) such that for all number fields \(K\) containing \(k\), \(X(K)- Z(K)\) is finite. In the present paper, by using her varieties \(V_n\), she proves the following remarkable theorem. Let \(n\geq 8\), and let \(\alpha_i\) \((i=0,\dots, n)\) be fixed elements of \(K\). Suppose that Lang's conjecture in the above form holds for \(K\). Then there are only finitely many elliptic curves of the form \(y^2= ax^4+ bx^2+ c\) \((a,b,c\in K)\) which have \(\alpha_i\) as the \(x\)-coordinates of some \(K\)-rational points. In particular the Mordell-Weil ranks of such elliptic curves are bounded.
