In the paper linear, continuous-time, finite-dimensional control systems with constant coefficients are considered. Including model uncertainty and sensor noise together with plant disturbances, the problem of robust state estimation is studied in detail. In the proofs of the main results, the frequency domain approach is extensively used, together with the input-output approach in observer design. A new observer structure is proposed and discussed, which is next used in the solution of a robust estimation problem. Moreover, the paper contains many remarks and comments on the state estimation problem for linear control systems. It should be pointed out that similar considerations are given in the paper [\textit{M. Darouach}, \textit{M. Zasadzinski} and \textit{S. J. Xu}, IEEE Trans. Autom. Control 39, 606--609 (1994; Zbl 0813.93015)].
