A simplified approach to the design of a mixed-sensitivity \(L^{\infty}\)-optimal compensator is developed for single-input systems. Mixed-sensitivity \(L^{\infty}\)-compensation is reduced to Helton's broadband matching problem, which has itself received an elegant operator-theoretic solution. The simplicity of the approach developed therein allows a clarification of some issues which have emerged in less transparent mathematical settings.
