This is a thorough study of some aspects of the differential calculi introduced by Woronowicz. Two algebras are attached to a first order differential calculus: the free algebra with the cover differential, and the optimal algebra. The paper mainly deals with calculi related to Yang-Baxter operators. It is shown that the optimal algebra in this case has a natural structure of braided Hopf algebra, isomorphic to the quantum symmetric algebra. These calculi are right covariant but they are bicovariant if and only if the braiding is involutive. It is also shown that the algebra of constants for the free algebra with the cover differential is also a free algebra. Under suitable conditions, a very elegant Taylor series decomposition formula is established. A natural necessary and sufficient condition for a 1-form to be a complete differential is presented.
