    Let \(f(z)\) be a transcendental meromorphic function in the plane, and let \(p\geq 1\) be an integer. \textit{W. K. Hayman} [Meromorphic functions (1964; Zbl 0115.06203)] proved an ``alternative'' theorem \[ T(r,f)\leq \left(2+ {1\over p}\right) N\left(r,{1\over f}\right) +\left(2+ {2\over p}\right) \overline N\left(r, {1\over f^{(p)}-1}\right) +S(r,f).\tag{1} \] The author considers a generalization of (1) to differential polynomials. Defined by \(P(z)= \sum^n_{k=1} \varphi_k(z)\), where \(\varphi_k(z)= \alpha_k(z) \prod^p_{j=0} (f^{(j)}(z))^{S_{kj}}\), \(\alpha_k\not \equiv 0\), the \(S_{kj}\) are nonnegative integers and \(T(r,\alpha_k) =S(r,f)\). For a differential polynomial \(P\), the degree,the minimal degree and the weight are defined as, \(\overline d(P)=\max_{1 \leq k\leq n}\{\sum^p_{j=0} S_{kj}\}\), \(\underline d(P)=\min_{1\leq k\leq n}\{ \sum^p_{j=0} S_{kj}\}\) and \(W(P)=\max_{1\leq k\leq n}\{\sum^p_{j=0} jS_{kj}\}\). Concerning alternative theorems to differential polynomials, {Chi-tai Chuang} obtained that if \(\underline d(P)\geq 1\), then [On differential polynomials, Analysis of one Complex Variable, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 821st Meet, Laramie/Wyo. 1985, 12-32 (1987; Zbl 0643.30022)] \[ T(r,f)\leq\left({\underline d(P)\over \underline d(P)-1}\right) N\left(r,{1\over f}\right) +\left({1 \over\underline d(P)-1}\right) \overline N\left(r,{1 \over P_1}\right) +S(r,f).\tag{2} \] The author proved if \(\underline d(P)\geq 1\), then \[ T(r,f)\leq\left( {W(p)+1\over \underline d(P)-1} \right) \overline N\left( r,{1\over f}\right)+ \left({1\over \underline d(P)-1} \right)\overline N\left( r,{1\over P_1}\right) +S(r,f). \] This result is an improvement for Chuang's theorem (2), in the sense that the \(N(r, 1/f)\) term in (2) can be replaced by \(\overline N(r,1/f)\) though it needs to change a multiplicative constant.
