The paper studies equations of the form \(Lu=g(b,\cdot,u)\) in \(L^2(\mathbb R^N)\), where \(L\) is a self-adjoint operator with dense domain in \(L^2(\mathbb R^N)\), \(b\) is a real parameter and \(g\) is a real-valued function which is asymptotically linear with respect to \(u\) and does not interfere (in an suitable sense) with the essential spectrum of \(L\). The authors establish existence and multiplicity results depending on the position of the parameter \(b\) with respect to the eigenvalues of \(L\). An application of the abstract results is given to Schrödinger equations.
