Subject of this paper is the nonlinear and nonautonomous oscillator \[ d^2x/dt^2+ f(x)\,dx/dt+ \omega^2x+ g(x)= p(t)\tag{1} \] with the problem to find conditions that guarantee the boundedness of all its solutions. After reporting on some earlier results for special cases of (1), the author mentions a recent paper by \textit{M. Kunze, T. Küpper} and \textit{B. Liu} [Nonlinearity 14, 1105-1122 (2001; Zbl 0998.34029)] that investigates equation (1) at resonance, i.e., for \(\omega\in \mathbb{N}\). The present paper therefore studies the remaining case \(\omega\not\in\mathbb{N}\). Assuming that \(f\), \(g\), \(p\) are smooth odd functions, \(p\) is \(2\pi\)-periodic, and \(f\), \(g\) satisfy certain conditions at infinity, the author proves that any solution of (1) is bounded in the phase plane. The proof uses KAM theory: After a series of transformations of (1), the final first-order planar differential system is reversible and has a Poincaré map which, outside a sufficiently large disc in the phase plane, is a perturbation of a twist map. Thus, applying the twist theorem for reversible diffeomorphisms yields the desired result.
