A formalism is introduced to investigate high-frequency gravitational waves. It is shown that this formalism describes both the Isaacson's method and the linearized waves. The Isaacson's method is then generalized to the case of non-vacuum space-times, and three classes of explicit solutions for high-frequency gravitational waves in particular backgrounds are obtained.
