      The author considers nonlinear gravitational waves by the high-frequency approximation. Using Whitham's two timing technique he shows that gravitational waves are no longer restricted to propagate along null geodesics as in the linear theory. He also shows that the theory is gauge invariant in the scope of this approximation.
