There are different type of multivariable basic hypergeometric series. Several of these can be associated to Lie algebras. The one studied in this paper can be studied from a purely analytic point of view. The authors establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating \({}_{10}\phi_9\) transformation. They use this to prove various terminating summations and other identities. Some of these results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series. For a general account of the importance of basic hypergeometric series in the theory of special functions, see the book of \textit{G. Andrews}, \textit{R. Askey} and \textit{R. Roy} [Special functions (1999; Zbl 0920.33001)].
