The author illustrates with many examples the concept of a minimal determining set. The bivariate spline space composed by the Bernstein-Bézier form of bivariate polynomials and minimal determining sets will be used to construct two new triangular finite elements. The corresponding software, described in this paper, is available on the world wide web.
