Kirchhoff established an equivalence between the solutions to the classical spinning top problem and stationary solutions to the Kirchhoff model for thin elastic rods with circular cross-sections. The authors modify this equivalence by studying an analog of the Kovalevskaya top in the theory of elastic rods.
