Let \(G\) be a semi-simple, simply connected, algebraic group, \(T\) a maximal torus in \(G\), \(W=N_G(T)/T\) the Weyl group and \(B\) a Borel subgroup of \(G\) containing \(T\). For \(w\in W\), let \(e_w\) be the point of \(G/B\) corresponding to the coset \(wB\) and let \(X(w)\) be the associated Schubert variety, i.e., the Zariski closure of \(Be_w\) in \(G/B\). The author gives, for \(G\) classical, two descriptions of the tangent space to \(X(w)\) at the identity: the first one in terms of the root system, and the second one in terms of multiplicities of certain weights in the fundamental representations of \(G\). The proofs are based on a result of \textit{P. Polo} [Indag. Math., New Ser. 5, No. 4, 483-493 (1994; Zbl 0833.20050)] and on some previous results of \textit{V. Lakshmibai} and \textit{C. S. Seshadri} [J. Algebra 100, 462-557 (1986; Zbl 0618.14026)]. In a second paper on this subject [\textit{V. Lakshmibai}, J. Algebra 224, No. 2, 167-197 (2000; Zbl 0974.14035)], the author describes the tangent spaces to \(X(w)\) at all the \(T\)-fixed points of \(G/B\) (for the action given by left multiplication) contained in \(X(w)\).
