The authors establishes various inequalities for the Maslov-type index for the iteration of paths starting at the identity of the symplectic group. As applications of these inequalities, the authors prove some existence results for periodic solutions, with prescribed minimal period, of a class of autonomous Hamiltonian systems of the form \(J\dot x=Bx+H'(x)\), \(x\in I R^{2n}\), with \(B:I R^{2n}\to I R^{2n}\) a symmetric endomorphism and \(H\) of class \(C^2\).
