Let \((E,\tau) \) be a Hausdorff locally convex topological vector space and \(\{p_\alpha\); \(\alpha\in I\}\) be an augmented associated family of seminorms for \(\tau\). A self map \(T\) on a subset \(M\) of \(E\) is said to be asymptotically nonexpansive if for each \(x,y\in M\), \(p_\alpha (T^nx-T^ny)\leq k_np_\alpha (x-y)\), \(n=1,2, \dots\), for all \(p_\alpha \), where \(\{k_n\}\) is a fixed sequence of real numbers such that \(k_n\to 1\) as \(n\to \infty.\) If this condition is true for \(n=1\) and \(k_1=1\) then \(T\) is said to be a nonexpansive map. Kakutani type fixed point theorems for certain semigroups for nonexpansive or asymptotically nonexpansive maps are proved. It is assumed that \(M\) has finite dimension and is a convex \(\tau\)-bounded, \(\tau\)-complete or \(\tau\)-bounded, \(\tau\)-sequentally closed starshaped subset of \(E\). An application of the obtained results to best approximation theory is given.
