The authors develop a new method to construct curves over finite fields with many rational points, via Kummer covers of the projective line or other curves. Their method is different from the traditional Artin-Schreier covers. This extends and improves their earlier result [Tables of curves with many points, Math. Comput. 69, 797--810 (2000; Zbl 0965.11028)].
