The Cartan-Jacobson theorem states that for characteristic \(\neq 2,3\) the Lie algebra of derivations of a Cayley algebra is central simple. The authors show here that this theorem still holds when characteristic \(=2\). However, in the case characteristic \(=3\), there is a unique 7-dimensional ideal which is a central simple Lie algebra of type \(A_2\); and the quotient of the derivation algebra modulo this ideal is isomorphic as a Lie algebra to the ideal itself.
