A closed convex subset \(C\) of a Banach space \((X,\| \;\| )\) is called antiproximinal if no point outside \(C\) has a nearest point in \(C\). This is equivalent to the property supp \(C \cap NA_{ \| \;\| }= \{0\}\), where supp \(C\) denotes the set of all support functionals of the set \(C\) and \(NA_{ \| \;\| }=\, \)supp \(B_ {\| \;\| }\) are the norm attaining functionals on the closed unit ball \( B_ {\| \;\| }\) of \(X\). Another equivalent property is that \(C+ B_ {\| \;\| }\) is open. A survey of the results on antiproximinal sets up to 1998 is given by \textit{S. Cobzaş} [Acta Univ. Carol., Math. Phys. 40, 43--52 (1999; Zbl 1010.46015)]. Two equivalent norms \(| \;| \) and \(\| \;\| \) on \(X\) are called companion norms if \(B_ {| \;| }\) is antiproximinal in \((X,\| \;\| )\). If, further, there exists an isomorphism \(T\) on \(X\) such that \(T(B_ {| \;| }) = B_ {\| \;\| }\) then \(| \;| \) and \(\| \;\| \) are called isomorphic companion norms. The paper is concerned with the existence of companion and isomorphic companion norms on various classes of Banach spaces. For instance, if \((X_ n)_ n\) is a countable family of separable Banach spaces then the supremum norm on their \(c_ 0\) direct sum admits an isomorphic companion norm (Prop. 2.1). In a separable polyhedral Banach space \(X\) the set of norms admitting an isomorphic companion norm is dense in the space \(N(X)\) of all equivalent norms on \(X\), with respect to the topology generated by the Hausdorff distance between the corresponding unit balls. The space \(X\oplus c_ 0\) with the supremum norm contains an antiproximinal convex body, but if \(X\) is non-separable then it does not admit an isomorphic companion norm. The authors show that on a Banach space with the convex point of continuity property (CPCP) there are no companion norms, a fact which was known for the strictly smaller class of Banach spaces with Radon-Nikodým property. Also, in a CPCP space the set of nearest points is weakly dense in \(C\) for every bounded closed convex set \(C\).
