The starting point for the results presented in the paper is the well-known pointwise Kato inequality. It is shown that harmonic spinors obey pointwise the Kato-Yau inequality, \[ | \nabla| \phi| | ^2\leq \left(\frac{m-1}{m}\right)| \nabla_A\phi| ^2, \] a strenghtened version of Kato inequality (\(\phi\) is \(D_A\)-harmonic spinor over an \(m\)-dimensional manifold and \(D_A\) is the Dirac operator). Also, a decay estimate for eigenspinors is obtained and proved on two different ways. The first proof is based on the established Kato-Yau estimate and the resulting differential inequality. In the second proof known eigenvalue calculations for the Dirac operator on the three-sphere are used. The established estimates are applied to the problems of gluing and ungluing \(PU(2)\) monopoles [\textit{P. M. N. Feehan} and \textit{Th. Leness}, Topology Appl. 88, No. 1--2, 111--145 (1998; Zbl 0931.58012), dg-ga/9709022].
