The present paper discusses possible time-like variations of the gravitational constant within the context of a higher-dimensional theory of gravity. Differently from many other papers on such a topic, Melnikov makes here a very careful comparison between many of the competing theories of several researchers who allow variations of ``fundamental constants''.
