The paper refers to the Dirichlet problem for higher-order linear hyperbolic equations \[ \begin{aligned} {\partial^{m+n}u \over\partial x^m\partial y^n} & =p_0(x,y)u +p_1(x,y) {\partial^mu\over\partial x^m}+p_2(x,y) {\partial^nu \over\partial y^n}+q(x,y),\;m\geq 2,\;n\geq 2,\\ \left.{\partial^j u(x,y)\over \partial x^j}\right |_{x=ia} & = \psi_{ij}(y),\;j=0,\dots,m_i-1;\;i=0,1,\\ \left.{\partial^k u(x,y)\over \partial y^k}\right |_{y=ib} & = \varphi_{ik} (x),\;k=0,\dots,n_i-1;\;i=0,1\end{aligned} \] in a rectangle \(D=[0,a] \times[0,b]\). The functions \(\varphi,\psi\) are satisfying some regularity and compatibility conditions. Sufficient conditions for the unique solvability of the boundary problem are shown. Conditions are set on the coefficients \(p_0 (x,y)\), \(p_1 (x,y)\), \(p_2(x,y)\). The basic condition to be fulfilled is that the boundary value problems \({d^nz\over dy^n}=p_1(x,y)z\); \(z^{(k)}(ib)=0\) and \({d^mz\over dx^m}=p_2(x,y)z\); \(z^{(j)}(ia)=0\) have trivial solutions only and the corresponding Green functions are bounded. Classical as well as weak solutions are considered. To some extent, the paper is a generalization of the results obtained by the authors for fourth-order linear hyperbolic equations in [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 49 A, No. 2, 197-219 (2002; reviewed above)].
