The authors propose a distributed real-time scheduling method using continuous feedback control to minimize both earliness and tardiness of job completions about due dates. The combinatorial scheduling problem is embedded into a dynamics problem in \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\), allowing the sliding mode dynamics to be explored effectively. An analytic model for sliding mode dynamics is developed on the basis of Filippov's method. This model is applied for the prediction of the frequency with which the arrival time trajectory visits various modes. A synthesis technique for control system gains is proposed to improve the scheduling performance. Some examples are considered in detail.
