The author deals with characteristic cycles, which play an important role in the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups and are nowadays being much studied. Concretely, the \textit{L. Barchini} and the author [Transform. Groups 22, No. 3, 591--630 (2017; Zbl 1377.22012)] gave explicitly the characteristic cycles of highest weight Harish-Chandra modules for \(\mathrm{Sp}(2n, {\mathbb R})\). Recall that a highest weight Harish-Chandra module is an irreducible Harish-Chandra module having a vector annihilated by all root vectors \(X_\alpha\) for \(\alpha\) in some positive system of roots (for some Cartan subalgebra). The simple groups for which infinite dimensional highest weight Harish-Chandra modules occur are those groups of hermitian type. The most difficult case is when \(G_{\mathbf R}\) is \(\mathrm{Sp}(2n, \mathbf R)\), one of the simple groups of hermitian type. Apart from other results, the author proves in the paper under review that the number of irreducible highest weight Harish-Chandra modules of infinitesimal character \(\rho\) having irreducible characteristic cycle is given by \(N(2l) = {2 l +1 \choose l}\) and \(N(2l+1) = 2 N(2 l)\) and that, when \(n = 2 l\), the proportion of highest weight Harish-Chandra modules with irreducible characteristic cycle is \(\frac{N(2l)}{2^{2l}} = \frac{1}{2^{2l}}{2 l +1 \choose l} \sim (\frac{2}{\sqrt{\pi}} \,\frac{1}{\sqrt{l}}).\)
