It is shown in [\textit{Z. Balogh} and \textit{M. Bonk}, Comment. Math. Helv. 75, No. 3, 504--533 (2000; Zbl 0986.32012)] that every strongly pseudoconvex bounded domain in \(\mathbb{C}^n\) endowed with the Kobayashi distance is Gromov hyperbolic. The natural follow-on question is whether this holds for weakly pseudoconvex domains. The principal result of this paper is that it does not hold: it is shown that the existence of a non-constant analytic disc in the boundary of the domain is an obstruction to Gromov hyperbolicity. However, certain weakly convex domains are Gromov hyperbolic, leading to the question `Is the Gromov hyperbolicity of a \(\mathcal{C}^{\infty}\)-smooth bounded convex domain \(D\) in \(\mathbb{C}^n\), endowed with \(d^{\text{K}}_D\), equivalent to the condition that \(D\) is of finite type in the sense of D'Angelo?' As noted in this paper, this more general question was recently answered in the affirmative in [\textit{A. Zimmer}, Math. Ann. 365, No. 3--4, 1425--1498 (2016; Zbl 1379.53053)]. The link to hyperbolicity provides a new conceptual characterization of D'Angelo type.
