The author studies radially symmetric solutions of the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system with generalized logistic source given by \(u_t=\delta u -\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)+\lambda u-\mu u^\kappa\), \(\Delta v-v+u=0\), with the homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in the ball in \(\mathbb R^n\) for \(n\geq 3\), with \(\lambda\in\mathbb R\) and \(\mu>0\). If \(\kappa\) is small enough (\(\kappa<\frac{7}{6}\) if \(n=3,4\), and \(\kappa<1+\frac{1}{2(n-1)}\) if \(n\geq 5\)) a condition on the initial data is derived which is sufficient for a finite-time blow-up. This criterion is shown to be mild enough so as to allow for the conclusion that in any positive continuous radial function is the \(L^1\)-limit of a sequence of continuous radial initial data for which the associated initial-boundary value problem exhibits a finite-time explosion phenomenon. This provides the first rigorous detection of blow-up in a superlinearly dampened but otherwise essentially original Keller-Segel system in the physically relevant three-dimensional case.
