We call \((X,\mathcal{F},\mu,T)\) a finite measure-preserving dynamical system if \((X,\mathcal{F},\mu)\) is a finite measure space and \(T\) a measure preserving transformation on \(X\). Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be a set of sequences \(a=\{a(k)\}_{k=0}^\infty\) of complex numbers. Then \(\mathcal{A}\) is called of \(L_1\)-Wiener-Wintner type if, for any finite measure-preserving system \((X,\mathcal{F},\mu,T)\) and any \(f\in L_1(\mu)\), there exists a measurable set \(X_f\) of full measure in \(X\) such that, for any \(x\in X_f\), the sequence \[ \frac{1}{n+1}\sum_{k=0}^{n}a(k)f(T^kx) \] converges for all \(a\in \mathcal{A}\). The classical Wiener-Wintner ergodic theory states that the set \(\Lambda_1:=\{(\lambda^k)_{k=0}^\infty: \lambda\in\mathbb{T}\}\), where \(\mathbb{T}\) consists of complex numbers of modulus \(1\), is of \(L_1\)-Wiener-Wintner type. The authors substantially generalize the theorem, both by proving its multi-parameter version, and by using a noncommutative context. More specifically, they show that in a finite von Neumann algebra with a trace, a large class \(\mathcal{D}\) of multi-sequences (corresponding to the class introduced by \textit{A. Bellow} and \textit{V. Losert} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 288, 307--345 (1985; Zbl 0619.47004)]), strictly including the multi-dimensional analogue \(\Lambda_d\) of \(\Lambda_1\), is of noncommutative bilateral \(L_1\log^{2(d-1)}L\)-Wiener-Wintner type and of noncommutative \(L_2\log^{2(d-1)}L\)-Wiener-Wintner type, where the classical almost everywhere convergence is replaced with the bilateral and unilateral almost uniform convergence. The classical \(L_1\) space is replaced in the multi-parameter case by the corresponding noncommutative Orlicz spaces.
