In the paper under the review, the authors obtain another version of the character formula given by \textit{J. D. Adler} and \textit{L. Spice} [Am. J. Math. 131, No. 4, 1137--1210 (2009; Zbl 1173.22012)], which should be more suitable for computations in \(p\)-adic harmonic analysis. The new version of the formula covers a wide range of characters, but uses a certain compactness condition. As an application of the new version of the character formula, the authors show the stability of the character sums for unramified toral supercuspidal representations, thus proving another expected property of a modification of the candidates for the \(L\)-packets constructed by \textit{M. Reder} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 620, 1--33 (2008; Zbl 1153.22021)].
