This paper studies the solvability of the following semilinear elliptic problem. Given $\rho>0$ and $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$, a Lipschitz, bounded domain, consider \[ \begin{cases} -\Delta U+\lambda U=\left\vert U\right\vert ^{p-1}U\text{ in }\Omega,\\ \int_{\Omega}U^{2}dx=\rho,\ U=0\text{ on }\partial\Omega, \end{cases}\tag{1} \] where $1<p<2^{\ast}-1$ and both $U\in H_{0}^{1}\left( \Omega\right) $ and $\lambda\in\mathbb{R}$ are unknown. The aim is to find conditions on $p$ and $\rho$ for the solvability of the problem. The main result stands as follows. There exists $\rho_{1}>0$ such that for every $0<\rho<\rho_{1}$ the problem (1) admits a solution. Moreover, in the subcritical case $1<p<1+4/N,$ $\rho_{1}=\infty.$ In the critical case $p=1+4/N$, $\rho_{1}$ is bounded below by the mass of ground state solution of $-\Delta Z+Z=Z^{p}$ on $\mathbb{R} ^{N}$. Finally, in the supecritical regime $1+4/N<p<2^{\ast}-1,$ $\rho_{1}$ is bounded below in terms of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of $-\Delta$ in $H_{0}^{1}\left( \Omega\right) $. The proof is based on a detailed blow-up analysis of sequences of solutions with bounded Morse index.
