Let \(\mathcal{M}=(M,g)\) be a compact smooth oriented Riemann surface of negative curvature. Let \(\chi(M)\) be the associated Euler characteristic. Let \(\mathcal{G}\) be the set of primitive closed geodesics on \(\mathcal{M}\); if \(\gamma\in\mathcal{G}\), let \(L(\gamma)\) denote its length. The Ruelle zeta function is defined by setting \(\zeta_R(s)=\prod_{\gamma\in\mathcal{G}}(1-e^{-sL(\gamma)})\). The authors show the following result which shows that the length spectrum determines the genus: Theorem. Adopt the notation established above. Then \(s^{\chi(M)}\zeta_R(s)\) is holomorphic and non-zero at \(s=0\).
