Let \(A\) and \(B\) be non-negative, irreducible non-permutation matrices. The author says that Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to the matrices \(A\) and \(B\) are strong Morita equivalent in 1-step when they are corners of another bigger Cuntz-Krieger algebra such that typical natural maximal commutative subalgebras \(\mathcal{D}_A\) and \(\mathcal{D}_B\) and gauge actions \(\rho^A\) and \(\rho^B\) are preserved under the respective corner operations. The Cuntz-Krieger algebras are then strong Morita equivalent when they are equivalent via a finite chain of 1-step strong Morita equivalences. Then the following is shown. The two-sided topological Markov shifts \(\overline X_A\) and \(\overline X_B\) associated to the matrices \(A\) and \(B\) are topologically conjugate if and only if the matrices \(A\) and \(B\) are strongly shift equivalent (by a result of \textit{R. F. Williams} [Ann. Math. (2) 98, 120--153 (1973; Zbl 0282.58008); errata. ibid. 99, 380--381 (1974)]), if and only if the Cuntz-Krieger triplets \((\mathcal{O}_A, \mathcal{D}_A, \rho^A)\) and \((\mathcal{O}_B, \mathcal{D}_B, \rho^B)\) are strongly Morita equivalent, if and only if \(\mathcal{O}_A\) and \(\mathcal{O}_B\) are stably isomorphic under an isomorphism preserving the typical maximal abelian subalgebras, intertwining the gauge actions up to unitary cocycles, and restricting to an isomorphism in \(K\)-theory of some sub-\(K\)-groups. The proof goes mainly by direct analysis of the algebras and various computations, but uses also older related results of the author.
