Let \(S \subset \mathbb{N}\) be a numerical semigroup with minimal set of generators \(\{n_1, \ldots, n_v\}\). The authors consider the numerical semigroup ring over an infinite field \(K\), \(R:=K[[S]]:= K[[t^{n_1}, \ldots, t^{n_v}]]\) with multiplicity \(e=n_1\) and embedding dimension \(v\). Set \(m\) the maximal ideal of \(R\), the associated graded of \(R\) is \(G:= \bigoplus_{n \geq 0} m^n/m^{n+1}\) and \(H_R\) the corresponding Hilbert function. This function is called non-decreasing if \(H_R (n-1) \leq H_R(n)\) for all \(n \in \mathbb{N}\) and decreasing if there exists a natural number \(k\) such that \(H_R(k-1) > H_R (k)\). The paper recalls several families of semigroup rings with non-decreasing Hilbert function. In the paper, by using a notion, that of support of elements in \(S\), the authors consider some families of semigroup rings and give conditions on the generators of the associated semigroup \(S\) in order to have decreasing \(H_R\). It is showed that, when \(v+3 \leq e \leq v +4\), the decreasing of \(H_R\) provides an explicit description of the Apéry set of \(S\). Moreover for \(e=v+3\) and \(e \leq 12\), \(H_R\) is non-decreasing and semigroups with \(e=13\) and \(H_R\) decreasing are classified.
