The authors prove the following results and corollaries thereof. Theorem. Let \(\Gamma\) be a periodic group (all of its elements have finite order) of \(C^1\)-diffeomorphisms of \(S^2\). {\parindent=0.7cm\begin{itemize}\item[1.] If \(\Gamma\) is finitely generated and has a finite orbit, then it is finite. \item[2.] If \(\Gamma\) consists of orientation preserving \(C^1\)-diffeomorphisms and acts with a global fixed point then it is abelian and any finitely generated subgroup is cyclic. \end{itemize}} Theorem. If \(\Gamma\) is a countable \(2\)-group (the order of every element is a power of \(2\)) of diffeomorphisms of \(S^2\) with bounded order then \(\Gamma\) is finite. Theorem. Suppose \(S\) is a compact orientable surface not homeomorphic to the \(2\)-sphere or the \(2\)-torus. Any finitely generated periodic group of homeomorphisms of \(S\) is finite.
