    Following fundamental ideas of Maurey and Rosenthal, it was proved in [\textit{A. Defant}, Positivity 5, No. 2, 153--175 (2001; Zbl 0994.47036)] that for every \(p\)-concave bounded (linear) operator \(T: X \to E\), where \(X\) is a \(p\)-convex order continuous Banach lattice over the measure space \((\Omega, \Sigma, \mu)\) and \(E\) a Banach space, there is a bounded multiplication operator \(M_g: X \to L_p(\mu)\), \(f \mapsto fg\), and a bounded operator \(S: L_p(\mu) \to E\) such that \(T = S M_g\). The paper under review studies interesting variants of this result within the setting of generalized Orlicz spaces. Given a Banach function space \(X\) over a measure \(\mu\) and an Orlicz function \(\varphi:[0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)\), define the generalized Orlicz space \(X_\varphi = \{f \in L^0(\mu) : \exists \lambda > 0: \varphi(\lambda |f|) \in X\}\) and endow it with the functional \(\|f\|_{X_\varphi} = \inf \{\lambda >0 : \|\varphi(|f|/\lambda)\|_X \leq 1\}\). Then, given an Orlicz function \(\varphi\) and an operator \(T:X \to E\), the authors characterize through a concrete weighted norm inequality involving \(\varphi\), when \(T\) allows a factorization \(T = i_w S\), where \(0 \leq w \in B_{(X_{\varphi^{-1}})'}\) is a so-called weight, \(i: X \hookrightarrow (L_\varphi(w\,d\mu ))_a\), \(f \mapsto f \chi_{\text{supp}\,w}\) an embedding, and \(S: (L_\varphi(w\,d\mu ))_a \to X\) some bounded operator (here, \((X_{\varphi^{-1}})'\) is the Köthe dual of \(X_{\varphi^{-1}}\) and \((L_\varphi(w\,d\mu ))_a\) stands for the order continuous part of \(L_\varphi(w\,d\mu)\)). The weighted norm inequalities, isolated in this theorem, motivate the study of the so-called \((\Phi, \varphi)\)-concave operators in Banach function spaces, where \(\Phi\) and \(\varphi\) are two Orlicz functions. Several applications are given, in particular, a variant of Maurey's famous extension theorem within quasi-Banach lattices.
