The author studies the structure of orthogonally additive \(\left(fg=gf=0\Rightarrow \phi(f+g)=\phi(f)+\phi(g)\right)\) and orthogonally mutliplicative \(\left(fg=gf=0\Rightarrow \phi(f)\phi(g)=0\right)\) maps between Figa-Talamanca-Herz algebras \(A_{p}(G)\) defined as the space of continuous functions \(u\) on a locally compact group \(G\) of the form \(u=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}f_{n}\ast\check{g}_{n}\text{ with }f_{n}\in L^{q}(G), g_{n}\in L^{p}(G)\text{ and }\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\|f_{n}\|_{q}\|g_{n}\|_{p}<\infty\) where \(\check{g}(x):=g(x^{-1})\) for \(x\in G\) endowed with the norm \(\|u\|_{A_{p}(G)}=\inf\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\|f_{n}\|_{q}\|g_{n}\|_{p}\). The results of this article are intimately connected to the question of the recovery of the topological group structure of \(G\) from \(A_{p}(G)\) investigated by various authors. After the introduction and preliminaries the author concentrates on linear maps between \(A_{p}(G)\) algebras for locally compact amenable groups. The first result on this topic (Proposition 3.1) is as follows (\(B_{p}(G_{2})\) is the multiplier algebra of \(A_{p}(G_{2})\)): Let \(T:A_{p}(G_{1})\rightarrow A_{p}(G_{2})\) be a linear surjective map. Then \(T\) is bouned and orthogonally multiplicative if and only if there exists a continuous map \(\alpha:G_{2}\rightarrow G_{1}\) and an invertible \(\omega\in B_{p}(G_{2})\) such that \(Tf(y)=\omega(y)f(\alpha(y))\) for all \(f\in A_{p}(G_{1})\) and \(y\in G_{2}\). This section is summarised with Theorem 3.3 (\(PM_{p}(G_{2})\) is the dual of \(A_{p}(G)\) and the \(p\)-operator space structure is a natural generalisation of the standard operator space structure): Let \(T:A_{p}(G_{1})\rightarrow A_{p}(G_{2})\) be a \(p\)-completely contractive orthogonally multiplicative linear map. Assume \(T^{\ast\ast}(e_{1})\) is a right identity of \(T(A_{p}(G_{1}))\) in \(PM_{p}(G_{2})^{\ast}\) for some weak\(^{\ast}\) cluster point \(e_{1}\) of a bounded approximate identity. Then there is a proper affine map \(\alpha:Y\subset G_{2}\rightarrow G_{1}\) defined on an open coset \(Y\) of \(G_{2}\) such that \(Tf(y)=\begin{cases} f(\alpha(y))\text{ if }y\in Y, \\ 0\text{ if }y\in G_{2}\setminus Y, \end{cases}\) for all \(f\in A_{p}(G_{1})\) and \(y\in G_{2}\). In the final Section 4, the emphasis is put on the class of \(n\)-homogenous polynomial maps between Figa-Talamanca-Herz algebras defined in general for two Banach spaces \(E,F\) as maps \(P:E\rightarrow F\) such that there exists a bouned symmetric \(n\)-linear operator \(\varphi:E^{n}\rightarrow F\) satisfying \(P(x)=\varphi(x,\ldots,x)\), for all \(x\in E\). The main theorem of this section (and the whole paper) is Theorem 4.5: Let \(P:A_{p}(G_{1})\rightarrow A_{p}(G_{2})\) be a \(p\)-completely contractive orthogonally additive and multiplicative \(n\)-homogenous polynomial. Suppose that \(P\) preserves a right identity of \(A_{p}(G_{1})^{\ast\ast}\). Then there exists a proper affine map \(\alpha:Y\subset G_{2}\rightarrow G_{1}\) defined on an open coset \(Y\) of \(G_{2}\) such that \(Pf(y)=\begin{cases} f(\alpha(y))^{n}\text{ if }y\in Y, \\ 0\text{ if }y\in G_{2}\setminus Y, \end{cases}\) for all \(f\in A_{p}(G_{1})\) and \(y\in G_{2}\). If \(P(A_{p}(G_{1})\) densely spans \(A_{p}(G_{2})\) and \(P\) has trivial kernel, then \(Y=G_{2}\) and \(G_{1}\) and \(G_{2}\) are isomorphic topological groups. The methods of the proofs employ tools from the theory of operator spaces, Banach algebras and abstract harmonic analysis.
