The author is concerned with the quantitative characterization of transcience-recurrence for symmetric jump processes generated by regular Dirichlet form. These characterizations are given in terms of lower rate functions. Here, the approach of \textit{M. J. Wichura} [Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheor. Verw. Geb. 47, 195--203 (1979; Zbl 0381.60024)] is taken into account.
