The authors are interested in certain \(2n\)-dimensional orbifolds \(X\), for example compact simplicial toric varieties, that admit actions of the \(n\)-dimensional compact torus. They consider torsion in the integral cohomology of such orbifolds. For a prime \(p\), they find a necessary, and in some cases sufficient, condition for the integral cohomology of \(X\) not to have \(p\)-torsion. They also give an example showing that in general the condition is not sufficient. \textit{S. Fischli} [On toric varieties, Dissertation, Universität Bern, 1992] and \textit{A. Jordan} [Homology and cohomology of toric varieties. Konstanz: Hartung-Gorre (1998; Zbl 0919.14033)] studied the integral cohomology of compact simplicial toric varieties by using spectral sequences. The authors show that the calculations of Fischli and Jordan for \(H^{2n-1}(X)\) and the torsion part of \(H^{2n-2}(X)\) agree with the results in the paper under review.
