An initial boundary value problem for third-order Korteweg-de Vries type equation is considered and numerically discretized with the aid of a new hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method. The approximate solutions are sought as a discrete characterization of the exact solution in terms of solving the local problems on each element. These elements are then patched together through transmission conditions on the interfaces. The semi-discrete scheme is proven to be stable provided that proper choices of the stabilization function in the numerical traces are made. For the linearized equation, the error analysis is done and the approximations to the exact solution are shown to have optimal convergence rates including also their derivatives. Numerical experiments are shown using the implicit in time discretization in combination with the Newton-Raphson method for solving systems of nonlinear equations. The numerical results supports the optimal convergence rates for both the linear and the nonlinear third-order equations.
