This paper comes back again on the well-known linear-quadratic deterministic optimal control problem but with new points of view related to differential geometry. One considers an optimal control problem with two-dimensional control, and it is shown that, in some instances, some bounded parts of the optimal trajectory of the system exhibit a chaotic behavior. Loosely speaking, this property holds for piecewise smooth Hamiltonian systems. The study is based on the chaotic dynamics of the Poincaré map, and the chaos on finite time intervals in Hamiltonian systems with discontinuous right-hand side. A detailed appendix displays some previous results on optimal control and Galois theory.
