For a given self-map \(f:M\to M\) on a compact connected manifold the question of the existence of a smooth map in the homotopy class of \(f\) minimizing the number of \(n\)-periodic points was considered by many authors. The following theorem is the main result of the paper: Theorem. Let \(M\) be a semi-simple Lie group and let \(f:M\to M\) induce the identity homomorphism on the fundamental group. Then the least number of \(n\)-periodic points in the homotopy class of \(f\) can be realized by a smooth map \(g_n\) (for each fixed number \(n\in \mathbb N\)) if and only if either the Lefschetz number \(L(f)=0\) or all the eigenvalues of the quotient homomorphism \(A(f)\) have moduli not greater than 1. Recall that an element \(x\in H^r(X,\mathbb Q)\) of the rational cohomology space is \textit{decomposable} if \(x=\sum_ix_i\cup y_i\) for some \( x_i\in H^{p_i}(X;\mathbb Q),y_i\in H^{q_i}(X;\mathbb Q), p_i+q_i=r, p_i>0,q_i>0\). Let \(D^r(X) \subset H^r(X;\mathbb Q)\) denote the space of all decomposable elements. Then the quotient space \( A^r(X)=H^r(X;\mathbb Q)/D^r(X)\) is defined and a continuous map \(f:X\to X\) induces a homomomorphism \(A^r(f): A^r(X)\to A^r(X)\) for each \(r\geq 1\).
