The paper is based on the study of the maximum orders of finite group actions on compact surfaces. In particular, the main topic is the study of the maximum order of finite group actions on closed surfaces which can extend over a given compact 3-manifold. In Sections 1 and 2, the authors give all the preliminaries needed to understand the other sections and give all the results known about the topic. Also, the authors introduce some theorems with new results. In Sections 3, 4 and 5, the authors give some certain examples for closed surfaces and bordered surfaces in \(\mathbb{R}^3\). Also, they give some results needed to prove the theorems in Section 1. The results can be summarized as: Let \(\Sigma_g\) denote the closed orientable surface of geometric genus \(g\). For fixed \(g > 1\), the maximal order of all finite groups admitting an action on \(\Sigma_g\) which is extendable to \(\mathbb{R}^3\) is determined. For fixed \(\alpha > 1\), the maximal order of all finite groups admitting an action on a bordered surface of algebraic genus \(\alpha\) which is extendable to \(\mathbb{R}^3\) is determined. For both types of surfaces both orientation-preserving and general actions are considered. In the case of bordered surfaces the authors also determine surfaces that realize the maximal order. The proofs and examples are highly complete, detailed and well explained. In general, the paper is well written and the results are interesting and novel.
