The authors discuss characteristics of the operator pencil method in finding approximate solutions for stationary systems and its applicability in obtaining spectral parameters of the related eigenvalue problem. The described method of reduction of a given complex spectral problem to a problem for pencil operators provides a suitable algorithm for practical numerical applications like, for example, finding plasma flow solutions in a tokamak.
