This paper deals with the following general version of the classical truncated moment problem: when can a linear functional \(L\) defined on a finite-dimensional vector space \(E\) of real-valued continuous functions on a locally compact topological Hausdorff space \(\chi\) be represented as an integral w.r.t. a positive Radon measure on \(\chi\)? If the set of representing measures for \(L\) is non-empty, then \(L\) is a moment functional and the so-called Tchakaloff Theorem ensures that there always exists a finitely atomic representing measure for \(L\). Then the authors establish several properties of the set \(\mathcal{W}(L)\) of all points in \(\chi\) which are atoms of some representing measure for \(L\), proving in particular that \(\mathcal{W}(L)\) coincides with the core variety of \(L\) introduced in [\textit{L. Fialkow}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 456, No. 2, 946--969 (2017; Zbl 06864226)]. The determinacy of \(L\) is also characterized in terms of the size of \(\mathcal{W}(L)\) and nice examples of determinate moment functionals are provided. Behind the above mentioned results there is a deep analysis of the moment cone, whose structure is studied by means of the total derivative of the moment map.
