For a reductive group \(G\) over a nonarchimedean local field \(F\), consider a spherical space \(X = H \backslash G(F)\) where \(H\) is the fixed point subgroup under an involution \(\sigma\) of \(G\) defined over \(F\). In the case when \(G\) is \(F\)-split and \(F\) has characteristic \(0\), \textit{Y. Sakellaridis} and \textit{A. Venkatesh} [Periods and harmonic analysis on spherical varieties. Paris: Société Mathématique de France (SMF) (2017; Zbl 1479.22016)] proved the Plancherel formula for \(X\) modulo the knowledge of the discrete spectrum using wonderful compactifications. Their starting point is to show the existence of good neighbourhoods at infinity of \(X/U\) for small, open, compact subgroups \(U\) of \(G(F)\); these neighbourhoods are related to boundary degenerations of \(X\). Here, by boundary degenerations of \(X\), we mean the spaces \(H_P \backslash G(F)\), with \(H_P =U^- (P \cap \sigma(P) \cap H)\) where \(P\) is a parabolic subgroup such that \(P\) is opposite to \(\sigma(P)\), and \(U^-\) is the unipotent radical of \(\sigma(P)\). In the paper under review, the author considers general reductive \(G\) (not necessarily \(F\)-split) and \(F\) has any characteristic different from \(2\). He shows the existence of good neighbourhoods at infinity mentioned above. Tools include the Cartan decomposition proved by Benoist and Oh, the author's definition of the constant term and asymptotic properties of Eisenstein integrals due to Nathalie Lagier. Once the author proves the existence of good neighbourhoolds at infinity, appropriate analogues of the Sakellaridis-Venkatesh results [loc. cit.] can be worked out and lead to the P.
