The paper investigates the semiclassical Schrödinger operator $P_V = -h^2\Delta + V $, where $h$ is small and $V$ is bounded and compactly supported. A main result is a resolvent estimate for small $h$ and for $\lambda$ in a compact set that does not include zero: \[ \left\| (P_V - \lambda^2)^{-1}u \right\|_{H^1} \le C e^{Ch^{-4/3}\log (1/h)}\left\| v \right\|_{L^2}. \] In the estimate $v$ is assumed to be supported in a ball and the $H^1$ norm is calculated in the same ball. Previous results placed more restrictions on $V$. A bound on resonance free regions follows: there are no resonances for negative $\lambda$ sufficiently close to zero, with the lower bound depending on $h$. The bounds are conjectured to be not optimal.
