If $M$ is a connected closed oriented surface of genus $\gamma\geq2$ and $\mathcal{M}_{-1}$ denotes the set of smooth hyperbolic metrics on $M$, then it is known that the tangent space $T_g\mathcal{M}_{-1}$ splits orthogonally into the directions generated by the pull-back by diffeomorphisms and the horizontal space $H(g)$: \[ T_g\mathcal{M}_{-1}=\{L_Xg, X\in\Gamma(TM)\}\oplus H(g). \] In the paper under review, the authors analyze the bases of $H(g)$ which appear naturally if one studies functions $f:\mathcal{M}_{-1}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ that are defined in terms of geometric properties of $(M,g)$. The main results of the articles, i.e., Theorems 1.2 and 1.3, yield precise estimates on some dual bases of $H(g)$.
